A few weeks ago, Many Techies has got forward mails about a wonder girl- A teenage girl from kerala named – “Hannan Binth Hashim”. The news was about a prodigy girl, who is appreciated by many well known scientists and graduated from ‘NASA’ by the age of 14. She is calling herself as an astrophysicist and claiming to prove Albert Einstein is wrong!!!. A lots of discussions were made among the tech community about this news, and finally here is the truth.
Hanan Binth Hashim is a 14 yr old class X student from Kozhikode, Kerala. There are amzaing reports about her unbelievable achievements on some websites which has created a sort of frenzy on the Indian sphere of the Web. Some excerps from the articles on Hannan Binth Hashim.
* Her works have been appreciated by former President A P J Abdul Kalam, scientists at IISc, IIMSc and many leading research institutes around the world including NASA.
* “I’m already in touch with President Obama and am looking forward to meeting him. He has always been a source of inspiration for me.
* “Absolute Theory of Zero is a new mathematical system which explains the established theories in a different light. Through the theory I’m trying to explain that the speed of light is not constant always,†she explains.
* Hanaan believes that the conditions in Venus are conducive to sustain life.â€Scientists should overcome the atmospheric challenges of Venus and should be willing to probe more. Like Mars, which we believe can sustain life, Venus too is a promising planet,†she said and added that the scientific community should accept that the universe is constantly changing.
One website screams “SPEED OF LIGHT IS NOT CONSTANT!! NEW THEORY BY 14 YEAR OLD INDIAN GIRLâ€. Another says “Hannan Binth Hashim: A 14-year-old with astrophysicistsâ€.
Let’s try to analyze the Hannan Binth Hashim phenomenon, is she an astrophysics genius or nothing more than stupid media exaggeration.
1. There’s nothing called “IIMScâ€. Probably they meant “IMScâ€. See how credible media is.
2. Why haven’t any reputed science journals/magazines published about her theory yet? As Wikipedia would do it, Citation Needed – atleast from one of the IISc journals.
3. Where is the proof of appreciation by A P J Abdul Kalam, the scientists at IISc and Barack Obama?
4. As far as I know, there’s nothing called “American Journal of Theoretical Physicsâ€. If it exists, probably it’s a homebrew journal.
5. “Hanaan believes that the conditions in Venus are conducive to sustain life. “Scientists should overcome the atmospheric challenges of Venus and should be willing to probe more. Like Mars, which we believe can sustain life, Venus too is a promising planet,†she said and added that the scientific community should accept that the universe is constantly changing.†I am a firm believer of extra-terrestrial life, but you shouldn’t take my personal opinion of life on pluto – just like that. 9. “Absolute Theory of Zero†sounds like a name right out of the imagination of an uneducated comic book writer.
Hannan Binth Hashim looks more like an average class X student with a great interest in science, esp Astrophysics, who also happens to admire A P J Abdul Kalam and Barack Obama, and probably quite active in science seminars and projects at Kozhikode – but nothing more than that. 98.9% of her achievements seems to be media manufactured.

After going thru all this I was reminded of comedy Serial “Mungeri Lal ki hassen sapne†! As a counter to Einsteins’s theory of relativity, he wrote †Theory of absurdityâ€! Once in a while you hear about Indian Child prodigies A Bihar boy was whisked away by NASA because of his techno briliance . Nobody heard any thing about him!
Then there was this software prodigy 13 yrs whom Microsoft considered to be so brilliant that they have shut down business. If you send any crap theory to a well known scientist, his secretary will send an encouraging reply like “this theory is very intersting †etc . If U show this to a reporter he will conjure up a story! A colleaue of mine, who thought he can put Einstein & his chorts in the witness stand wrote aletter explaining his (crap) theory to a Nobel Lauraete, Physisist who sent him a innocuous letter. This fellow was running around with that letter & how he could outwitt even Nobel laureates !! THis fellow was in his late twenties at that time .
NO wonder if children like Hashim crave for some publicity .But the media should have been more careful . Another leading Malyalam daily front paged that an American swallowed 16 dogs in 5 minutes!! Hot dogs were translated as DOGS!! So much for care in reporting .
It seems like an attempt to get some sponsors for her further study and to get publicity. But the tall claims and the importance given to the story by the newspaper puts things different.
But one thing is important, no news came in any leading newspapers negating the story. The internet reaches only a few,someone within the scientific community has to write an article on this fake story in any one the leading dailies or magazines. otherwise the story will be believed as genuine by millions ( the readership is that much).

The achievements claimed by Hanan is highly exaggerated She designed a rocket to Mars and Nasa tested it. Nasa is still designing a rocket to moon that will be able to send men to moon in 2020.
It requires lot of knowledge in Aeronautics, thermodynamics,electronics, communications and aerospace engineering to design a rocket. Malayalam newspaper Mathrubhumi also published many things about her with out sound verification
As already pointed out, the “Space School Graduate†is not a degree. Nasa Space center at Houston is an organization to promote interest in space study among youngsters. The degree they give is only informal. Anyone ready to participate in their activities for a few days may get it. The Space Center have rocket modeler software with which one can design a model and launch it provided one is willing to pay money. These things are nothing extraordinary. Definitely Miss Hannan’s parents must have known it.
2. Reports mention several “mentors†of Miss Hannan. One of them is Prof. Jayanth Murthy of Indian Institute of Science. Prof. Murthy admits that Miss Hannan has visited IIA library but clarifies that he hasn’t had any scientific discussion with her

Anyone who is even remotely knowledgeable about physics and the scientific world and community can verify easily that this girl’s ‘accomplishments’ and ”achievements’ and ‘recomendations” is fabricated. Sadly, it is becoming all too common to see con artists enter the scientific world to cheat the public for the sake of money.
This girl’s family might have deliberately cooked up the girl’s accomplishments to cheat Indian well-wisher’s and investor’s out of money, using her as a bait. With much publicity and hype, there must have already been people to send her family money and offers to help fund this ”genius’s” studies and trips abroad, help her family, and meet her financial needs, etc. Thats how the racket works.

I checked to see the facts, using simple google search . Name of the mentor if you search (Hind Rathan award winner Dr Somya Vishwanathan – she is a medical doctor not a physicist and that too in the US ). Same with other things mentioned.
The physics journal that is mentioned in the below article does not exist. The contest mentioned is only for American Citizens. So you can also please verify the facts yourself.

Several English Media also carried the story, Kerala Government too came with all support – After going through this suspicious report an IIT student contacted the Editor of the English daily which carried the report and demanded an apology for fooling the public by printing such fake stories.The Editor in Chief contacted the reporter and asked him to provide the proof. The poor reporter contacted Mathrubhumi reporter and managed to collect the phone number of the girl.
After trying to contact several times he made contact – The first request from her side was – Will you please help me to find some sponsors? The reporter who wrote lavishly about her high flying contacts,fans and admirers recieved his first jolt. No Wipro, No Enfosysis, No Google, No Queen of Qatar neither Roger Federer is around to help her now!
When he asked her about the certificate from MIT- After repeated request she gave him a routine acknowledgement letter send by MIT which they send after receiving an application! She also complains that no one is helping her because she belongs to a Minority Religion!
When enquired about the geniunity of Hanan to Abdul Kalam, Former President of India following is the reply we got from his PA
“Reference your mail addressed to Dr Kalam. He has not authenticated any paper from any student. According to him, If any paper has to be recognised it has to be published in scienticfic journals/magazines and debated in scientific forumsâ€
Does Mathrubhumi expects it’s readers to ring Obama, Neil Armstrong, Roger Federer or Abdul Kalam to confirm whether the news is true? Even after this many days Mathrubhumi

Come on, this is a very funny story. I laughed hard reading this.
We can blame the media, and may be even her parents, but I think we should go easy on her. She is just a 14 year old girl, who is expressing her scientific interests. From all I read, I do not see any false statements from her, velocity of light may not be constant, big bang may have little to do with the universe, and evolution must be reevaluated – these are all possibilities. She said “scientists should overcome atmospheric problems in Venus”, which is a statement on hope. Venus at least has an atmosphere, Mars does not and really does not have a magnetic field to protect atmosphere and people from cosmic rays. If scientists are crazy enough to think about living in Mars with all these difficulties, then I think possibility of living in Venus may not be any more difficult (at lest you do not get cosmic rays down on the surface with a thick atmosphere). Everything else are statements by the reporter, not hers. So, I think it is a bit too much to criticize her.
One more thing, I read repeated reference to someone in Canada Moffat proposing velocity of light to be different long ago, and so her proposal is not new. Long before Einstein, Maxwell proposed that velocity of light is a constant – does that diminish Einstein’s work?

My point is that Hannan has not said anything about NASA or MIT or called herself a scientist (she was not quoted saying any of that). If we read the report very carefully, statements related to NASA, MIT and naming her as an astrophysicist are characterizations by the reporter, not quotes that can be directly attributed to Hannan.
Even Hannan does not declared anything by herself, the media reporters done it for her. agreed, so do you think the media reporters can guess and write anything about a person? i don’t think so. Hannan/her family might have told something to them and the media reporters exaggerated that and published that.

After reading these posts, I had to change my opinion. I think she played at least a partial (and significant) role in this publicity drive.
I did not check the journal until you pointed out – it does not look like a real scientific journal, but many of the authors are university faculty members. The impact factor is low, around 0.7, so, I think you are probably correct about the journal. In any case, her work is not in there, so there is no point anyway.

We have our own similar scandals here in the U.S. which have yet to come to light. One was the bogus claims made in the 2004 Siemens science competition for invention of a NEW alternative energy technology that, in fact, was over 25 years old! Not only were the (so called) “expert judges” completely duped that year, but all those in the media were as well (well … that’s not really so hard to believe). It remains to be seen if Siemens will ever fess up to this fiasco, or if the media is going to be willing to go back and check that one out again. I suspect it is just too embarrassing for everyone involved. Those curious about this can just check what was claimed in the 2004 press releases regarding this supposedly “new technology”.
I think it is very important that science scams and/or bogus science stories, in particular, get ferreted out as quickly as possible because people (and the media) tend to trust scientists far more than ordinary people – and that’s the way it should, hopefully, remain. If scientists lose credibility (as was recently the case with climate change research) then we are in serious trouble! For this reason the 2004 Siemens science competition scandal is another one that still needs to be exposed. Besides which the other students involved need to be made aware of what happened and why they may not have been fairly judged.

I feel that this is not a hoax story..its good to support her..bcoz though the criticims has come,sure something good for long is waiting for her..May be during her undergrad studies,also she can come up,she can come up with more tutoring,.its sure a 15 year old wil hv her own limits..but privately feel..HANAAN..the world is waiting for you to come up..I dont know which field you will excel..may b in all..or in just one or two..but be it yourself..and make this come true…research hard and publish it..

If we provide them enough help and guidance, anyone can raise up. but the case of Hannan is a lil bit different.
This is just any school exhibitions, and she is claiming that she is graduated from NASA and NASA is using her ROCKET(Hahaha!).

If she wanted to learn the space science, please finish your schools, then join for a graduation in related subjects, go for a PG and then for a PHD. there you can research about your interest with the help of the experts and equipments. then you have to find new theories and prove with the help of the science.
