Technopark company digitella closed down

Digitella, A UK based company operated from technopark has closed down their operations recently. It says like some managerial issues as well as the recession pressure made them to shut down their operations in Technopark.

Digitella started its operations before 3 years, and they started as a small team in T-Bic Nila with 18 employees.eventually they acquired more business and employees and even they booked some space in tejaswini – the new building ( one of the biggest buildings in kerala).

And a week back, they announced about the closure of their business, and now all the digitella employees are puzzled about their career in this tough time.

It says like Digitella was a very successful company with a good working culture. They made many competent professionals with in the short period, and every employee has something good to say about the company. But it’s unfortunate that they weren’t able to hold off the recession long enough.

We hope that all these tough situations will be over soon, and they can re-open their facility in one fine day.

  9. The global economic slowdown has taken its toll on the IT companies in Kerala, with some cutting salaries, while some others
have already having informed stakeholders that they have no option but to cut operating costs.

The IT sector in the state has reached an annual turnover of around Rs.1,500 crore (Rs.15 billion/$300 million), providing direct employment to 60,000 people, of which close to 30,000 are employed at the various Technopark campus here and Infopark campus at Kochi.

Sunil Gupta, chief executive of the New Jersey headquartered Collabera Enterprise Solution said companies had now started looking at various options for cost-cutting and started implementing them as well.

“We are not cutting salaries but maintaining status quo on increments. We are assessing the performance of our employees,” said Gupta, who was the founder president of the G-Tech group of Technopark companies here.

“Earlier we were giving a flat 17-20 percent hike. But now, due to the slowdown, we will go in for performance-based evaluation.”

Executives in some other firms in the state capital said their companies were adopting a more direct model, with salary cuts ranging from 15-20 percent.

“We have been told that our salary will be cut and that portion would be kept aside. The situation will be reviewed every three months. If the management
sees some improvement, a portion of that salary will be given back to the employees,” said an executive.

    M. Vasudevan, a top official of Technopark, said that IT firms were also cutting costs, but there was no drastic action similar to what was happening in other IT parks in the country.

“Yes, salaries are being cut or status quo is being maintained. Employees have realised that there is no other option. They know that when the good times come back, they would be compensated,” said Vasudevan.

The slowdown has also affected suppliers of computers and peripherals on rentals. “An animation company at Technopark asked us to take back 20 high-end computers, which we had given on monthly rental. One of their projects got cancelled,” said an official.

The Kerala government has decided to chip in to help the companies in various Technopark and Infopark campuses. It has decided to defer payment of a part of the rent due from these companies in the next fiscal.

  12. The peace and tranquility of the Technopark campus in Trivandrum, Kerala was rocked on Thursday when the employees of an animation company staged demonstrations against the management’s decision to send some of them on leave as part of cost cutting measures. Employees at the Toonz Animation studio in Technopark allege that this forced leave is a prelude to sacking them.

But the Toonz management has assured them that this is a temporary resort to tide over the tough times the company is going through.

The company had in January implemented a 20 to 25 per cent cut in the salary to overcome the financial crisis. P. Jayakumar, CEO, Toonz Animation, said the company had asked only 20 employees to go on leave after several projects got delayed in the wake of funding restrictions. “These staff will remain on our rolls and will be absorbed once their leave period is over.” But the employees are not in a mood to buy this argument. According to employees who didn’t want to be identified, over 150 of them including several in senior positions have been forced to go on leave over the past six months apart from about 20 performance related sacking.

However, the management has denied this allegation saying that they have requested less than five percent of the employees to go on 3 to 6 months leave. As the blame game continues, it’s a harrowing time for those who have to sit at home at such a short notice.

Toonz Animation is a leading production house with about 500 employees and has tie-ups with several Hollywood studios. Some of their recent productions were Wolverine and the X Men, Dragonlance & Mostly Ghostly (US), Freefonix & Finley (Europe) and Tenali Raman & Hanuman (Asia).

Protests in Technopark over layoffs are not new thing in Kerala where red flags fly high but such incidents will only damage the image of Kerala as an investment destination.

  13. We need investors to cultivate our economy. But investor should have the ability to forecast their business and their oppurtunities for at least two years. Without considering this most of the bussinessmen were tried to recruit more heads and when a crisis happen they are going for layoff, that means they are considering only shorterm profit. They have no loss. Becas, if they are running 2-3 year IT businness, they will earn profit with a minimum capital. Its a fact…So try to be an IT investor and prepare for next recession !!!
