Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will launch its mobile WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access), a fourth-generation technology that enables high-speed wireless Internet access  in Kerala.  This is the first launch of  BSNL  WiMax  service in South India.
The  WiMax-based solution is set up and deployed like cellular systems using base stations with coverage over a radius of  several kilometers. The customer premise equipment (CPE) will connect the base station to the customer. WiMax is available in both indoor and outdoor versions.

The Union government has Thursday accorded SEZ status to the prestigious Cybercity project at Kochi, became a major boost to Kerala IT industry.The propsed project is 100 per cent subsidiary, and the Blue Star Raltors Pvt Ltd proposes to set up a state-of-the-art Rs 400 crore cyber city in 70 acres of land.
HDIL Cybercity will be Kerala’s first integrated IT township with residential apartments, villas, schools, shopping malls, multiplex, club house, service apartments and a star hotel, besides finest infrastructure facilities for IT and ITeS companies.

TCS Wiz Quiz, India’s largest tech quiz for school students, being organised by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), will be here on October 10 2009.
The event would be conducted at IMA House, near Jawaharlal Nehru International at Kaloor in which students from Class 8-12 can participate, TCS said in a press release here.
Last year, over 1000 students participated in the quiz here. Each institution can send eight teams (two members per team) through the respective insitutions before Oct 5 to the TCS IT Wiz Quiz coordinator, Tata Consultancy Services, Tejomaya, Infopark.

Infopark doubles IT exports

Infopark Kochi, an IT park promoted by the Kerala government, Tuesday said its exports almost doubled last fiscal to touch Rs.600 crore ($124.5 million).
It said in a statement that the companies based in the Infopark campus have hired 2,500 IT professionals in 2007-08, taking their total head count to 9,000.
Infopark houses 51 IT companies.
Kerala’s total IT exports last year stood at Rs.4,000 crore.
“What the work environment in Kerala offers is a growth opportunity for both employers and employees,” Kerala’s IT Secretary Ajay Kumar said.

Technopark-Trivandrum and Infopark-Kochi have approved annual expansion plans envisaging budgets of Rs 650 crore and Rs 250 crore respectively for 2009-10.
This was decided at general body meetings of the State’s two principal technology parks, the Chief Minister, Mr V. S. Achuthanandan.Briefing newspersons on the decisions taken at the meetings, he said the Technopark would immediately start construction activities that would cost around Rs 100 crore.

Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said on Wednesday that the global economic slowdown may delay the launch of the Rs.15 billion Smart City project in Kochi.
The proposed project, to be jointly launched by the state government and the Dubai-based infrastructure major Smart City, is slated to come up on a 246-acre plot with 8.8 million square feet of built-up space. 70 per cent of this space is earmarked for IT and IT-enabled services.
